“More coffee,” mumbled Robert, his voice raspy. He reached for the lukewarm pot and poured himself another cup. The hammering began early this morning, a percussion that echoed the pounding in his chest. His shoulders ached. He hadn’t been this tense since... well, since the last time the neighbor’s house was renovated.

He stared out the window, at the bright morning, at the chaos next door. He had to finish this report. He had to make the calls. He had to be functioning. He felt a wave of dizziness and leaned against the counter for support.
